CT Beer Trail

What is a reasonable price for a beer dinner? I use to go to beer dinners on a fairly regular basis a few years back and remember them being around $50 or $60 for a dinner. I'm not sure what the average prices are now but I have been seeing some for $75 or $100 which seems a little steep to me. What do you think?

I've been to two recent beer dinners at Willibrew where the quality of the food and their beers was excellent. The price for each dinner was $59 per person, and that included tax and tip. I think this is a very reasonable price, and that's why we have no problem driving there on a Monday night from Granby.

I think it really depends on what is getting served. If I'm expecting to sip on bottles of something I can grab anywhere, the food, pairing, and discussion should be worth the majority of what I'm paying for. A great guest speaker talking about something interesting could grab $75 if I think I'm going to get something out of it.

$100 is reasonable if I'll be tasting beers I can not get any other way, or would pay a good amount for to try normally. I guess I'm trying to say "where is the value?" Also, I hate to say it (but I stare at this every day): a dollar just isn't what it was even a few years ago. Especially when it comes to beer.

Some of the best events (woo CT Beer Trail!) have come in much cheaper, too. ;-)

Erik,

In order to determin if a too price is high or not, you need to really look at what is being offered for the price.  For example, is it all you can drink or is there a limit or a certain number of tickets for drinks.  Also, the quality of the food is important.  For example, is it a buffet which would be all you can eat, or is it a sit down meal where you get a set meal or courses.  Is it pub food, or an upscale gormet menu such as Mikro in Hamden would offer.  Sometimes there is a guest celebrity or beer expert appearing, which can raise the price.  I think you can see what I mean.  So, weigh all these things out and then determine if you think it is worth it or not.

I am going to try to cover all CT beer dinners on my blog http://tapintoct.blogspot.com/ .  I have seen the prices usually between $60 and $75.  I recently came across one for $100 but that was the only one I have seen at that price.  Seem to be a variety of factors including: Number of courses, scarcity of the Beer offered, quality of the menu as well as location (It seems as though all of the dinners at Gingerman Greenwich start @ $75 and go up from there.

There was recently a Beer Dinner at Darien Social (Very nice new place) with Beaver Beer and the price was only $34 + tax and gratuity but also it was only a 3 course dinner

I am doing one on May 7th at Barcelona in Fairifield for $42.

What brewery?  If it is a CT based brewery I will feature it in my Connecticut Craft Beer Blog: TapintoCT.blogspot.com
