Remembering Connecticut Home Brewer, Competition Organizer and Good Friend Von Bair.

Von Bair; Nov. 10, 1931 – Mar. 12, 2012

Von Bair grew up on a potato farm in Idaho, a curious and academically inclined young man. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where his intelligence, hard work and talent gained him entry into the Naval Academy in Annapolis for officer training. As an officer, he served on both ships and submarines and taught in Yale’s Naval ROTC program. After he retired from the Navy, Von worked as the chief…

Tasting Report: Beaver Beer

New local Connecticut beer brand Beaver Beer presented their product this past week at Eli Cannon's Tap Room in Middletown CT. The brand representatives on hand were co-owners Bill O'Brien and Baxter Urist, with the third owner (Rob Anson) away for the evening. When asked why they chose beer as an occupational choice, Urist and O'Brien both laughed and said that they were just all guys that have loved beer…

Happy St. Paddy's Edition: Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale

Beer411's KayTeeStinch hits up the CT Beer Trail...

Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale

4.30 ABV %

As the Irish half of Beer411, I thought it was appropriate to weigh in on one of my favorite Irish pints, and remind everyone that while green beer is festive, it still tastes like Budweiser, because it is. It just has green food coloring in it -…

Stout competition?

I thought I saw something about a CT Stout & Porter competition coming up in May, but I can't find it now.  I have a chocolate stout I could enter.  Does anybody know of such an event?

Three Beer Things I'm Looking Forward to in Spring

Reposted from my blog, Malted Musings. And no the blog isn't dead, I just finally got a real job.

Although this mild winter we've had may make it seem like we are already in the grips of spring, in reality the spring season doesn't officially start until March 20th. What this weather has done (besides make me extremely grateful for a lack of snow) is make me begin to…

First batch in a long time

Just got back to brewing. Just finished an American ale based on a recipe from Lake Front brewery and provided by Northern Brewers. Unbelievably good. Tomorrow going to start a brew from Surly brewery.

I know I have a ways to go but you got to start somewhere
